Job Description:
Life Skills Special Education Teacher
The teacher ensures that students meet academic success in their classroom as measured by achievement on IEP goals, student grades, and preparation for the post-secondary goals.
The Life Skills teacher is responsible for:
- Creating lessons for 4 separate academic classes that follow a structured lesson plan format
- Instruction in a life skills curriculum that includes instruction in adapted literacy, math, daily living skills, history, and science classes.
- Developing and implementing the IEPs of students being served in the Life Skills class
- Creating IEPs that translate into measurable results for students.
- Monitoring and responding to progress monitoring results and student assessment data.
- Conferring with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, service providers, and other professionals to develop IEPs designed to promote students' educational, physical, and social development.
- Teaching socially acceptable behavior, employing techniques such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement.
- Employing special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory and perceptual motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
- Preparing, administering, and grading tests, assignments, performance tasks and other methods of assessing student progress and using the data to inform instruction.
- Planning and supervising class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers, or other experiential activities, and guide students in learning from those activities.
The ideal candidate:
- Has taught special education in elementary school for 3 years or more.
- Has experienced a high level of measurable success working with urban youth.
- Has knowledge of PA Academic Standards and PASA assessment anchors
