Founding Elementary School Principal
Start Date: August 2010
Location: Bridgeport, CT
About Achievement First:
Achievement First is a charter school management organization started in July 2003 by the leaders of Amistad Academy, a high performing charter school in New Haven, CT. A non-profit, 501 (c)(3) organization, Achievement First is creating a network of achievement-gap closing charter schools in Connecticut and New York.
Each Achievement First school division (K-4, 5-8, and 9-12) has a Dean of Students, Academic Dean, and Principal. These three leaders work together to ensure that all students show dramatic student achievement gains and internalize the school's REACH (respect, enthusiasm, achievement, citizenship, and hard work) values. The Principal leads their school both academically and with regard to school culture.
Responsibilities of the Principal will include:
- Lead and oversee the school's instructional program
- Analyze data with other teachers regularly to maximize student performance
- Ensure that every student shows dramatic achievement gains and that the school meets the ambitious performance goals set by Achievement First
- Teach one section of either reading or math
- Plan appropriate professional development for all teachers
- Formally supervise, observe, and evaluate all school staff
- Supervise the Academic Dean, Dean of Students, and School Manager
- Create a data-centered and achievement-oriented school culture
- Cultivate positive relationships with parents and the local community
- Interview and select teachers
- Communicate regularly with teachers, parents, and students both informally and through weekly staff and parent memos
Requirements
-A bachelor's degree from competitive university is required, a master's degree is preferred
-Successful past experience leading adults
-4 years of urban teaching experience
