Job Description:
Elementary Academic Dean
Location: Hartford, CT
Each Achievement First school division (K-4, 5-8, and 9-12) has a Dean of Students, Academic Dean, and Principal. These three leaders work together to ensure that all students show dramatic student achievement gains and internalize the school's REACH (respect, enthusiasm, achievement, citizenship, and hard work) values.
The Academic Dean works to ensure that every child is progressing at least one level (e.g. level 3 to level 4) or below proficient to proficient OR reaching ambitious targets for school-wide levels of proficiency/mastery. The Academic Dean also "owns" (or at least "takes the lead on") a particular subject, grade level, and/or portfolio of teachers.
Skills and characteristics
- Very, very strong classroom management and discipline skills
- Excellent communication skills, especially with students and parents
- Extremely high standards for student achievement
- Relentlessness - doing whatever it takes to ensure success
- Team player
- Willingness to aggressively seek administrative certification
- Belief in the Achievement First mission and educational model
- Maturity, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and "roll-up-my-sleeves" attitude
Educational background and work experience
- A bachelor's degree from a competitive college or university
- At least 2 years of urban teaching experience with a record of high student achievement
