Job Description:
Job Brief:  
The Math Support Tutor provides specialized tutoring services to students in grades 6 through 12 who may face unique challenges, including educational gaps and emotional or behavioral issues. The tutor will help these students strengthen their mathematical skills, build confidence in their academic abilities, and support their successful reintegration into traditional educational settings. 
 
Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Conduct one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions tailored to the specific needs of students, covering topics from basic math to pre-calculus. 
  • Assess students' individual learning needs, including any gaps in their mathematical understanding, and develop customized tutoring plans to address these needs. 
  • Provide support with school assignments, preparation for exams, and comprehension of mathematical concepts, with an emphasis on building foundational skills. 
  • Maintain detailed records of student progress, challenges, and successes, and adjust tutoring strategies as needed. 
  • Participate in professional development focused on working with at-risk youth, trauma-informed educational practices, and other relevant areas. 
  • Utilize educational resources and tools that are appropriate for students with diverse learning needs and backgrounds. 
  • Provide guidance on academic organization, time management, and study habits to help students develop skills that will benefit them beyond their math coursework. 
  • Serve as a positive role model, demonstrating patience, empathy, and resilience in all interactions with students. 
  • Interacts in a positive and professional manner with students and colleagues 
  • Participates in assigned trainings and staff development opportunities 
  • Represents ACES positively through personal conduct, attendance, and completion of assigned duties. 
Knowledge of: 
  • Strong proficiency in mathematics, with the ability to tutor subjects up to pre-calculus. 
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed educational practices and an understanding of the challenges faced by students in these environments is highly desirable. 
  • Experience with educational technology and online tutoring platforms is a plus. 
  • ACES policies and procedures, inclusive of assigned program specific policies and procedures 
Skills in: 
  • Experience working with at-risk youth or students with special needs. 
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and sensitively. 
  • Patience, empathy, and a commitment to supporting the educational and personal growth of students facing significant challenges. 
 
Ability to: 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team. 
  • Foster a positive, supportive, and non-judgmental learning environment that encourages student engagement and confidence in their abilities. 
  • Collaborate with educational staff, social workers, and other professionals to align tutoring with the students' overall rehabilitation and educational goals.
