School Counselor needed at Jonathan Law High School for the 2026-2027 school year.  
Current CT School Counselor certification (068) required.  
Salary and benefits per MEA contract.

SUMMARY/GOAL OF POSITION:
To facilitate the learning process, as well as personal and career development, through the effective application of guidance and counseling skills
 
ESSENTIAL TASKS OF THE POSITION:
  • Provides guidance and counseling to individual students and groups, assisting them to gain knowledge of their academic strengths and weaknesses and make appropriate academic and career choices;
  • Serve as case manager of students under a 504 and maintain compliance with scheduling of meetings, completing documentation and ensuring 504 adherence  
  • Assists individual student and groups in the development of social skills, decision making and problem-solving skills, conflict resolution, family issues, and making healthy choices;
  • Provides guidance and counseling to individual students and groups to help them improve academic progress, attendance problems and interpersonal relationships;
  • Provides crisis intervention as appropriate;
  • Assists parents in addressing school-related problems and issues; refers students and their families, as needed, to appropriate specialists, special programs, and/or outside agencies;
  • Assists in the transition to middle school, high school and post high school options;
  • Systematically develops and evaluates annual individual planning for high school and post high school, including career path, academic progress, high school program of studies, and post-secondary educational options;
  • Arranges and participates in case conferences on individual students;
  • Maintains case files and records of ongoing case activities;
  • Promotes gender equity and advocates for equal access to programs and services for all students;
  • Takes a leadership role in the infusion of counseling content into the curriculum, staff development, and parent educational programs;
  • Coordinates parent education programs on issues relating to personal and academic development, making a smooth transition from elementary to middle school, middle school to high school, and planning post high school options;
  • Provides individual counseling in response to student and/or parent requests.
 
PROFESSIONAL:
  • Adheres to the ethical standards of state and national school counselor associations;
  • Adheres to the preferred practices  prescribed by state and national school counselor associations;
  • Implements Board of Education and school policies and rules governing student life and conduct;
  • Promotes and upholds district  and school goals and objectives;
  • Provides for appropriate student and parent advocacy;
  • Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities;
  • Cooperates with colleagues, administrators and other staff members;
  • Demonstrates an on-going interest in educational concerns and professional learning to keep up with new trends and programs and state requirements;
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding personal student and family information; 
  • Promotes the educational program to the community and contributes to a program of positive public relations;
  • Maintains high standard for attendance and punctuality so that student achievement is not adversely impacted;
  • Performs other tasks and responsibilities as delegated by the principal and/or Director of Pupil Personnel Services.
 

QUALIFICATIONS:
 
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Must have a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university;
  • Prior job related experience required.
 
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Valid Connecticut Teaching Certificate for appropriate level of instruction and/or subjects, which must satisfy the definition of “Highly Qualified” status for content area assignment.
 
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Background check required
  • Screening for Tuberculosis (TB) required
