Job Description:
Qualifications: Current State of New Mexico SPED Teacher Licensure
Essential Functions: All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization.
Key Functions of Special Education Teacher: Provides an atmosphere which allows students to have the opportunity to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and psychological growth. Responsible for organizing and implementing an instructional program and for providing direct instruction in subject matter and skills that will result in student achievement in accordance with each student’s ability.
1. Maintains a high level of knowledge regarding special education issues, ensures compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
2. Manages caseload for students with disabilities; writes and supports student IEP, FBA, BIP Plans.
3. Plans and implements a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students and complies with State Department of Education Standards and Benchmarks plus the CMS Board of Education goals and objectives.
4. Collaborates and communicates with the building principals and parents/guardians concerning students with special needs.
5. Communicates regularly with parents outside normal classroom day for a reasonable amount of time as consistent with applicable law by means of multiple platfoms.
6. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.
7. Evaluates pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
8. Is available for a reasonable amount of time to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.
9. Participates in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings and maintains on-going documentation and progress-monitoring.
10. Plans and coordinates the work of paraprofessionals, parents, and volunteers in the classroom and on field trips.
11. Creates an environment for learning as noted in the standardized classroom.
12. Collaborates with peers to enhance the instructional environment.
13. Completes all District required paperwork and documents.
14. Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices.
15. Models professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and community.
16. Incorporates SEL lessons into curriculum.
17. Follows health and safety practices and regulations.
18. Performs other duties assigned as needed.

1. Knowledge of organizational systems, racial equity, social justice, culturally relevant instruction/practices, and special education laws and practices as well as New Mexico and federal education laws/regulations and district policies
2. Ability to collaborate with families and community members of diverse cultural and educational backgrounds
3. Willingness to improve competency by periodically participating in professional growth and to remain current with the latest developments in the profession
4. Effective written, verbal, and problem solving skills
5. Knowledge of curriculum and research-based programming
6. Ability to make independent judgments
7. Ability to keep and maintain accurate records and to meet deadlines
8. Knowledge of various routine tasks, duties and procedures and the ability to follow specific instructions
9. Ability to exercise considerable and sound judgment to instruct students and manage their behavior
10. Willingness to improve competency by periodically participating in some form of professional growth and to remain current with the latest developments in the profession
11. Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
12. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board of Education policies
13. Able to work collaboratively to achieve the overall goals of the school and the District
