Head of School Job Description 
The Excelsior School of Philadelphia, a small private school in Northwest Philadelphia, is seeking a new Head of School. The Excelsior School of Philadelphia serves students from preschool through 5th grade.   
We are seeking a new Head of School who is an inspirational and visionary educational leader with a track record of fiscal responsibility.  The ideal candidate will have a passionate commitment to ensuring an education of the highest quality for the children and families of Northwest Philadelphia. 
Qualifications include: Bachelors required, Masters preferred in Education or a related field, 5-7 years of experience in early childhood, elementary education or an educational nonprofit.  Entrepreneurial experience or business experience, even in an unrelated field, is value added.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Experience creating an organization and maintaining sustainability preferred
  • Proven experience with staff recruitment, supervision, and budget management
  • Highly self-motivated
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Appreciation for students with learning differences as well as for students from diverse family and socio-economic situations
  • School Leadership/School Principal certification and/or experience not required, but is appreciated
  • Articulate and advocate the mission of The Excelsior School for students, families, staff, & community
  • Be inspirational, visible, and accessible to members of the school community and beyond.   
  • Establish school wide discipline plan with restorative practices. Have the ability to collaborate and provide professional development to staff that include a focus on curriculum, instruction, assessment, and intervention
  • Lead by example the creation of a culture at The Excelsior School that reflects the values associated with the Excelsior philosophy, including grace and courtesy
  • Develop specific operations, goals and objectives to implement the strategic goals that have been mutually established with the Owner
  • Hire, supervise, mentor, and evaluate teaching and support staff as needed
  • Manage substitutes for classrooms and act as a substitute in classrooms as needed
  • Oversee admission of students, develop and implement a recruitment and enrollment plan 
  • As informed by the School ’s Policy Manual, and in consultation with the Owner, make final decisions regarding disciplinary action or dismissal of staff
  • Lead and facilitate staff meetings to guide and support staff
  • Promote highly effective and open communication between staff, parents, and Owner   
  • Be the spokesperson for the Excelsior School of Philadelphia
  • Foster relationships with staff, community, school districts and feeder schools
Finance and Fund Development
  • Administer the operating budget and be accountable to the Owner for effective business management
  • Prepare reports for annual audits – financial and academic
  • Apply for grants that support the economic viability of the school
  • Serve as philanthropic ambassador within the organization and community
  • Provide opportunities for ongoing professional development for all staff
  • Encourage staff to propose, plan, and develop programs in accordance with the mission of the school.
Compliance and Accountability for School Operations
  • Conduct written evaluations of staff, oversee student evaluations and assessments
  • Oversee ongoing program evaluation, including curriculum standards and curriculum development
  • Ensure that the school is in compliance with all applicable government laws and regulations
