The Susquehanna Township School District endeavors to be a world-class school district with performance excellence expectations of employees. The District has an opening for a Secondary School Counselor at the High School.
Job Goal:
Provides a comprehensive counseling program for students. Help students understand their abilities, aptitudes, and interests in light of the opportunities and demands they currently experience or may experience in the future, including student assessment and career development. Plays an integral role in support of Student Assistance Programs, Pennsylvania’s Career Education and Work Standards, and Character Education programs. Help students overcome problems that impede learning and aid them with making educational, occupational, and life plans that aid personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women.

- Introduces students to a variety of career opportunities based on personal interests and assessment results.
- Provides students the opportunity to explore career pathways by offering opportunities to participate in job shadowing, career fairs, internships, college fairs, field trips, etc.
- Assists with and prepares for state-mandated testing (PSSA/Keystone Exams)
- Attends IEP/ GIEP meetings.
- Collaborates with case managers to monitor academic progress.
- Works with the Building Principal to write and review 504 Service Agreements in collaboration with families and appropriate professional staff.
- Enroll new students by reviewing and interpreting previous school records, contacting former schools if necessary, and developing a schedule.
- Monitors student progress toward graduation requirements and monitors student grade-point averages in relationship to achievement.
- Maintains student records and protects the confidentiality of records.
- Provide information about school and community activities to students as needed.
- Maintains contact with parents via email, phone conversations, and personal meetings, in a timely manner.
- Provides counseling to students with attendance problems and disciplinary problems
- Counsels individuals and small groups of students toward social and emotional growth.
- Refers students with problems and their parents to special programs, specialists, and outside agencies.
- Assists students and parents in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data and works with students in evolving education and occupation plans in terms of such evaluation. Facilitates student goal setting.
- Works in collaboration with case managers to resolve students’ educational needs, including Individual Educational Plans and Gifted Individual Educational Plans.
- Works with the Building Principal to write and review 504 Service Agreements in collaboration with families and appropriate professional staff.
- Participates in the homebound instruction referral process.
- Maintains student records and upholds compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and related federal and state laws.
- Provides clear communication between the sending school and the receiving school for students who are new to the District.
- Participates in the process of identifying students who are at risk for academic or behavioral problems.
- Works in conjunction with other Student Assistance Program members to identify students’ barriers to learning, support research-based prevention programs, and foster positive connections with students, parents, and the community.
- Reviews appropriate referrals to SAP and seeks to obtain parent permission for student involvement in the SAP program. Gathers information from parent(s), teachers, and other school personnel.
- Provides ongoing consultative support for teachers and school personnel related to the presenting issue of the SAP referral.
- Performs any other duties assigned by the Building Principal or appropriate Central Office Administrator. The District may add or change duties at any time.
